June 23-25, 2011 Book Of The Dead Seminar

For 2500 years the spiritual quest of the Platonic Philosopher has been presented in Plato’s dialogues as a journey of the soul that culminates in a vision of reality and to its source. Chief among his works are myths and tales of the after life and of reincarnation. When taken together they can be considered as his Book of the Dead.

The Noetic Society is presenting a series of four workshops directed by Pierre Grimes, Ph.D. on Plato’s “Book of the Dead” and its comparison with the Tibetan Book of the Dead.
The Noetic Society will present the first weekend workshop-meditation retreat on Plato’s myth of Er from his Republic, and contrast it with the dynamics of the pathologos, those false beliefs about the nature of reality and of the self. The roots of man’s fundamental ignorance will be presented and traced through its cycle of rebirth and through the transmission of the pathologos in the family/clan. For the logos expressed through the myth of Er stands to the pathologos as expressed through these false beliefs as a model is reflected to its distorted copy.
Without an understanding of the myth of Er there can be no understanding of Plato’s Republic since it provides the necessary grounds for understanding that justice reigns over injustice and, so, this myth is a defense of the goodness of the divine, a theodicy.
The second workshop-meditation will bring together Plato’s myths of the dead found in Plato’s Phaedo, and from the second speech of Socrates in the Phaedrus.
The third workshop-meditation will feature the spiritual practice of philosophy as the separation of the soul from the body as outlined in Plato’s Phaedo and contrast it with the yogic path drawn from the Yoga of the Clear Light from the Evans Wentz’ Tibetan Yoga and Secret Doctrines.
The fourth workshop-meditation will be a close study of the Tibetan Book of the Dead and those works of Plato’s presented in the prior workshops. .

Early reservations are suggested and priority will be given to those who sign up for the entire series. The date for the first workshop has been set for June 23-25, 2011. The second, third, and fourth workshops are tentatively set for September 2011, January 2012, and March 2012. The accompanying talks by Pierre Grimes will be video-taped and available for purchase by participants at a later date.
